Achy neck and shoulders? Dull complexion? Toenails worthy of a science fiction movie? Northland spas feel your pain – and they’re working hard to make it go away.

If buffing, steaming, polishing and other de-stressing treatments were once reserved for the rich and famous, these days teenagers and their moms, businessmen and grannies are enjoying a little pampering.

“A lot of blue-collar people are starting to pamper themselves more than they used to – we can see a kind of mainstreaming,” says Nancy Bagley, manager of Sonrisa Salon and Day Spa. “We get all kinds of people. You don’t have to have a gold or platinum card to come in.”

Sonrisa offers clients unique services such as shiatsu massage pedicures and wine peel pedicures, a chocolate mousse mask, massage, body treatments and wraps. Their CACI Ultra machine from Europe performs non-surgical facelifts and ultrasonic dermabrasion.

Founded in 1999 by two nurses, Back and Body Works in Gladstone offers therapeutic massage, facial treatments such as Botox and nutritional supplements.

The Elms resort at Excelsior Springs celebrated its 100th birthday in 2008. The Elms boasts one of the region’s first and still leading full-service spas. Long known as a health resort, the Elms has built a loyal clientele from around the country as well as a strong local following.

“People are realizing that spas are available and affordable for everybody. It’s a great thing to do for entertainment, relaxing, getting away and recharging,” says spa manager Tisha Mason. “It’s important in dealing with modern life – finding that balance.”

The Elms’ spa menu includes massages, body wraps and scrubs, manicures, pedicures and a wide variety of skin care treatments using the popular Pevonia line of products.

At Argosy Casino Hotel and Spa, guests enjoy access to massage services, facials and body treatments, including and Aromatic Moor Mud Body Wrap that revitalizes the skin with minerals and enzymes.

Spa Tuscano, one of the newest spas in the area, focuses on health, wellness and rejuvenation through some of the Midwest’s newest treatments. The elegant spa, which opened in November 2007 in Briarcliff Village, features dramatic lighting, meandering hallways, soothing waterfalls, arched doors and classic columns to produce a serene environment.

Water is the basis for many of the spa’s services, including the Amazon Riverwalk Room, where guests walk a path of natural stones, sit by the fireplace and enjoy massage, multiple-spray showers, a Riverbath and light therapy. In the R.E.S.T. Room, you can float

in darkness in total silence, and the Dermalife Spa Jet 2 HydroTherapy Capsule offers a 360-degree Vichy water shower, heat, steam, vibratory massage and chromatherapy.

Spa Tuscano provides massages, skin care, body wraps and scrubs and services for men. A non-UV system provides air-brushed tans, so clients emerge as golden gods and goddesses.
